| What misconceptions do people have about home oxygen concentrators?

With people’s attention to physical health, home oxygen concentrators have gradually become popular. However, due to the lack of relevant knowledge, many friends have various misunderstandings about the oxygen generator. Below are 5 common “misunderstandings” about oxygen generators, see how many you have won!

1. Only patients need an oxygen concentrator

Most people’s understanding of the oxygen generator starts from the scene of the ward in the TV series. They think that only severely intubated patients will use it, and normal people do not need oxygen at all. In fact, this perception is not correct.   Oxygen inhalation is not only a treatment method, but also a way of health preservation.

For mental workers, oxygen inhalation can effectively relieve symptoms such as dizziness, chest tightness, and poor spirits at work. Regular maintenance of oxygen can not only relieve the sub-health state of the body, but also improve the body’s immunity and enhance its own physical fitness.

2. Oxygen inhalation produces dependence

The so-called “dependence” in medicine refers to “drug dependence”, that is, drugs interact with the body and cause mental and physical changes. In order to experience the excitement and comfort brought by the drug again, the patient needs to take it periodically and continuously.

But oxygen therapy and oxygen care have nothing to do with it. First of all, oxygen is not a drug, but a necessary factor for the survival of organisms; secondly, whether it is oxygen therapy or oxygen health care, it is to relieve hypoxia symptoms and meet basic physiological needs, not to pursue some kind of pleasure. Therefore, oxygen inhalation does not produce dependence.

3. Oxygen inhalation can cause oxygen toxicity

Oxygen toxicity refers to the inhalation of oxygen exceeding a certain pressure and time, resulting in pathological changes in the function and structure of some collective organs. Prolonged inhalation of high concentrations of oxygen may cause oxygen toxicity.

4. Only pay attention to the price when purchasing an oxygen generator

Some friends often see slogans such as “1,000 US dollars take away the 5L machine” when purchasing an oxygen concentrator. The so-called 5L machine means that the oxygen flow rate is 5L per minute when the oxygen concentration reaches more than 90%. The so-called oxygen concentration of more than 90% by some unscrupulous merchants is when the flow rate is adjusted at 1L; as the flow rate increases, the oxygen concentration will gradually decrease. For patients with hypoxia, such a machine simply cannot solve the problem.

On the other hand, there is no need to blindly pursue high-priced, brand-name machines. There are many small brands of oxygen generators made in China that are of good quality and cost-effective.

5. The higher the oxygen flow, the better the effect

If it is oxygen therapy, it will be better to choose an oxygen generator with a 5L machine or higher oxygen flow. Taking COPD patients as an example, these patients take oxygen for more than 15 hours a day, and the 3L machine cannot meet the long-term oxygen therapy needs of COPD patients for such a long time.

If it is oxygen health care, it is generally enough to choose a machine below 5L. Inhaling oxygen for 20-30 minutes before going to bed every day can relieve the fatigue of the day and improve the quality of sleep.
