| What are the side effects of oxygen inhalation?

Oxygen inhalation is also called oxygen therapy. Like drug therapy, there are certain risks. So, what are the side effects of excessive oxygen inhalation?

For patients with hypoxia, whether it is circulatory hypoxia or hypoxia caused by abnormal respiratory function, as well as hypoxia caused by poor tissue function, oxygen inhalation has a good therapeutic effect. However, high concentrations of oxygen may cause side effects, the main side effects are as follows:

1. Oxygen poisoning: prolonged inhalation of high-flow oxygen can cause an increase in oxygen free radicals in tissues, thereby damaging lung tissue, causing excitement, irritability, delirium, convulsions, and respiratory distress syndrome;

2. Retinal damage: It may damage the retina, cause retinal atrophy, lead to decreased visual field or blindness;

3. Nasal injury: When the mask oxygen inhalation is too tight, it can cause the carbon dioxide concentration to increase. In addition, when the oxygen inhalation flow of the nasal cannula is too large, it will impact the nasal mucosa, causing congestion and edema of the nasal mucosa, and even causing epistaxis;

4. Other side effects: It can cause abnormal brain function of newborns, cause proliferative retinitis, and even blindness. Therefore, the oxygen concentration should be controlled when the infant is inhaling oxygen, especially when the newborn is inhaling oxygen.
